Women's ice hockey swept by Robert Morris

The University of Maine women's ice hockey team dropped a pair of home matches this weekend to Robert Morris. The team fell to 1-10-1 overall while Robert Morris University improved their record to 5-6-1.

On Friday night in the first game, Robert Morris opened the scoring in the first period with a power-play goal by Alissa Dorman. Maine outshot RMU 11-6 in the first period, but ended the period trailing 1-0.

In the second period Maine started the scoring when Amy Stech added her second goal of the season 14:11 into the period. Both Vanessa Vani and Taryn Peacock assisted on the play. Just over two minutes later, Maine took the lead when rookie Courtney Fox tallied her first collegiate goal on assists from Vani and Peacock. RMU tied it up just 29 seconds later when Sara O'Malley added an unassisted goal, her sixth of the season. Maine outshot RMU 15-7 in the period.

Tied up going into the third period, Robert Morris dealt a blow to the Black Bears just over three minutes into the period. Mallory Giambra notched the go-ahead goal with assists from Jackie Gibson and Kristen Miles. Maine didn't help their cause in the third tallying seven penalties for a total of 25 penalty minutes.

In the end, RMU held on to their lead and went on to win the game by a score of 3-2.

UMaine goaltender Genevieve Turgeon notched 26 saves, while RMU goalie Brianne McLaughlin tallied 31 saves.

On Saturday afternoon, Maine and RMU faced off for their second game of the series. RMU started the scoring early with a Sara O'Malley goal 7:20 into the first period. UMaine came back two minutes later when Amy Stech scored her second goal of the weekend and tied up the score 1-1. UMaine took the lead just before the break after Kaitlin Zeek tipped in a Peacock pass. It was Zeek's first collegiate goal of her career. Maine headed into the second period on top 2-1. RMU outshot Maine 13-9 in the first.

In the second period, RMU tied it up when Jessica Riley stole a neutral zone pass and sent it to her sister Jordan Riley who put it on net. RMU scored the goal shorthanded. Robert Morris outshot Maine 10-6 in the second.

In the third, the teams went back and forth, but neither could score a go-ahead goal. UMaine goalie Sarah Bishop stayed strong in net and made 12 saves in the period.

In overtime, Robert Morris sealed the deal with the game-winning goal by Megan Picinic. Bishop totaled 37 saves in the game while McLaughlin tallied 19.

The Black Bears next game with be at home against UConn on Nov.16. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at the Alfond Arena.
