Without Barker, UM suffers loss
Issue date: 12/11/06 Section: Maine Sports
Just when things were going well for the University of Maine women's basketball team, the squad was dealt a trio of blows over the last four days.
Two came in the form of losses - 72-64 to the College of the Holy Cross Thursday and 69-49 to St. Joseph's yesterday.
The worst and most devastating of the three came in the opening minutes of Thursday's contest when senior captain Bracey Barker left the game with a wrist injury.
Barker returned to Orono to be evaluated by team doctors as the rest of the Black Bears headed to Philadelphia to challenge St. Joe's. The extent of the injury was not known at press time.
Without their leading scorer and all-around best player, the Black Bears suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this year while falling to 5-3.
Yesterday, the Black Bears fell behind early but used a 12-3 run late in the first half to go into the break trailing 20-18.
St. Joe's stormed out of the gates after halftime, going on a 21-3 run to put the game well out of reach.
Ashley Underwood, UMaine's leading scorer behind Barker, shot just 1-of-8 from the field for four points.
The Black Bears were led by Katie Whittier - 10 points and five rebounds - and Amanda Tewksbury - six points and four rebounds. UMaine shot just 32 percent from the floor in the game and was outrebounded by a 40-29 margin.
