Both teams showcased a strong offense Saturday. The game was an exciting and fast-paced battle with both teams playing hard and generating terrific scoring chances. The game featured five lead changes as the teams went back and forth all day. Neither team led by more than one goal at any point. The winning goal was scored in overtime by junior Kim Meagher, who netted UMaine's fourth power-play goal of the game. Seniors Katie Sunstrum and Brigitte Laflamme assisted on the play as Sunstrum got the puck on the draw and fed it to Laflamme, who dished it to Meagher for the score.
"We just never gave up," senior captain Kelly Law said. "We worked hard the whole game even though they kept coming back."
Head coach Lauren Steblen said that the biggest reason for the Black Bears' victory was their "all-around work ethic, both in practices and out on the ice." She said the team played tough the whole game, and that having last weekend off gave the team a big advantage, with more time to practice and prepare.
Sophomore Robyn Law of UMaine was the first to score in the game, with an unassisted power-play goal at the 17:29 mark of the first period. Jody Karnik, the goalie for North Dakota, was able to block Law's first shot attempt, but she gathered her own rebound and pounded it home. But UND took advantage of their own power-play opportunity late in the first period, when Alexia Gagnon-Laplante beat UMaine goalie Genevieve Turgeon to tie the score 1-1.
Action in the second period started early when UND's Samantha Bowers scored 1:06 into the period. The Black Bears quickly got even, however, with a power-play goal by senior Kelly Law while goalie Turgeon was credited with the assist. UMaine took a 3-2 lead at the 14:10 mark with an unassisted power-play goal by freshman Jenna Ouellette. UND tied it up once again less than two minutes later, completing the scoring for the second period. The Fighting Sioux came out aggressive in the third period and notched a go-ahead goal just 2:07 in, but did not remain ahead for long as the Black Bears were able to even it up at the 6:42 mark. The goal was scored by Brigitte Laflamme for her third of the season. Seniors Sonia Corriveau and Pam Patterson were credited with assists on the goal.
