The door to the future is wide open for the University of Maine's graduating class, but fears of leaving the familiar and moving on persist.

New media major Kevin Mitchell is worried about keeping in touch with his friends at UMaine.

"I have met so many wonderful people, and I am really nervous to be leaving them behind, being hundreds of miles away. It worries me because I feel like I have just begun some really great relationships with people, and I don't want that to end," he said.

While the changes frighten Mitchell, they also excite him.

"Within the next couple of years, I will have to make some really big choices in my life that will decide a lot about my future," he said.

After graduation, Mitchell will move back to his home in Minot, Maine for the summer and will apply for a full-time job in the fall. He hopes to find a position at a marketing and design firm in the Portland area.

Mitchell said it has been a great four years for him at UMaine, despite all of the stress that came along with it.

"College has been a huge learning experience for me. I have learned a lot about myself and have also learned a lot about friendships and relationships."

College hasn't been all smooth sailing for Mitchell. His worst experience at UMaine: failing a class for the first time. "I wasn't used to a grade like that," he said. "I made sure it never happened again."

Mitchell will leave UMaine proud, having paid for most of his college and living expenses by himself. "I have been working hard, working 20 or more hours a week ever since freshman year and have been able to manage myself well."

He hopes all the hard work pays off because in five to 10 years he would like to be working for L.L. Bean as a graphic designer or working for a magazine or newspaper company doing layout and design.

Fourth-year political science major Kandi Ames shares similar fears with Mitchell. She worries about the friends she will lose touch with but looks forward to the future.
